Active citizenship

What is BANDIAR project?

BANDIAR is a project aiming to give citizens the opportunity to interact and participate in constructing an ever closer Europe, and to raise awareness about participation of woman in political life in the local level national and even international level. It works in a European perspective, rooted in the diversity of local realities.

Why women in Europe?

Gender equality in all areas of life is a fundamental right and value of the European Union, enshrined in policy since the Treaty of Rome in 1957. Yet more than fifty years on, women still fail to play an equal role in politics across Europe. As the 2009 European elections approach, it is time to highlight once again this issue and take action to promote change.

Women in european politics.

Of the 495 million citizens of the EU, just over half (51%) are women. Yet, in September 2008 only 245 of the 785 MEPs (31%) were female. In national parliaments across the European Union, the situation is somewhat worse. Slightly less than one in four members of parliament are women (24%), with a similar proportion in governments.

What is active citizenship?

We believe that European citizens have a key and primary role in building Europe. For this reason, BANDIAR will promote actions and debates regarding the future of Europe, the necessity to get Europe closer to its citizens and the importance of a wider involvement of citizens in the life of the community, both at the local and at the European level, with the aim to promote good governance throughout Europe.

What can I do?

BANDIAR project relies in an interactive dialogue through citizens panels, a methodology involving directly common citizens. The participation to these panels can be an occasion to present ideas and feelings that will be the addressed to the EU institutions.
